Mackinac Island - July 2011

Late last night we got back from our first trip to Mackinac Island, Michigan. Mackinac is a tiny island, accessible only by ferry, that sits between the straights where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet. The only modes of transportation on the island are horse, bike and foot. Pretty much the only things sold on the island are fudge and tee shirts. There is surprisingly little to do and yet we were so enchanted with the place. As a runner, I was thrilled with their temperatures that rarely get any higher than the low to mid 70s. There are beautiful trails around the perimeter of the island which I ran every morning and that Jake and Joe biked. Other than catching up on lots of reading, there was little else that we did and yet the days flew by.

Today as I wake up in D.C. with the temperature hovering around 100 degrees, I already miss the place.

The Grand Hotel where we stayed.

Jake loves having his own space and so he took over our balcony and slept there every night. I explained to the hotel staff that he had not been banished outdoors and that this was his idea.

Emily and James - July 10, 2011

Emily and James came to me through one of my second shooters, Rena. Her other job is being an attorney, and the bride's father and she have known each other for years through their respective legal careers. When Emily got enaged, her dad asked Rena about handling the photography. She graciously passed them along to me and then helped me out.

The ceremony and reception were both held at the Four Seasons Hotel. Many thanks to Tina Nader from the hotel for all her help. The beautiful flowers were from Da Vinci's. And, of course, a big shout out to Rena, for both bringing this great job to me and then assisting me with it.

These are the bride's brothers and their wives dressed in Hazmat suits for their toasts to the bride and groom.
